HANDS-ON SCIENCE NIGHT WITH HOPKINSON ELEMENTARY

By COLE MASUNO NOV. 13 2015

The Growing Up STEM club at Los Alamitos High School organized an elementary school-wide science

night, where high school students encouraged interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and

Math).  It was an interactive event where different age groups engaged in scientific experiments such as:

the Discovery Lab for Kindergarten-1st grade students with marshmallow hats, walking water, and bottle tornadoes;

2nd -3rd students participated in lava lamps and boat construction, while 4th-5th extracted DNA from a banana.  The

Growing Up STEM club’s goal was aimed to inspire the “general interest in the youths in our community

through community events”.  By the end of the night, the students didn’t want to leave because they

were still eager to participate, and some had to be dragged home by their parents.  Jeanie Debold, a parent, even

said that her “boys had…the most fun [they] had ever had!” and they “wanted to do more that night” even after they were

dismissed .  Overall, it was an amazing turnout for our first event, and we plan to organize more events in

the future!
